Peri-implantitis: Is it possible to prevent?

Infections around dental implants are common. Peri-implantitis is difficult to treat and it is important to detect early signs of inflammation before progressive bone loss occur. Evaluation of risk factors associated with peri-implant infections are important, to be able to give each implant patient a proper maintenance program. If not diagnosed and treated, peri-implantitis may lead to implant loss. The speech focus on how to diagnose peri-implant diseases, analyse risk factors associated with peri-implant diseases, discuss treatment of peri-implant infection and underline the importance of maintenance of the implant patient.

Ann-Marie Roos-Jansåker works as a senior consultant and collaborates with several universities in research into peri-implantitis and periodontitis. She is an associate professor at Malmö university and past president of the Swedish Society of Periodontology and Implantology. Her thesis "Long-time follow-up of dental implants and treatment of peri-implantitis" in 2007, received great international attention when peri-implantitis was not particular recognized. A special interest is how our professional approach reflects on the patient and our ability to guide the patient in behavioral changes. She offers several courses and lectures both nationally and internationally every year.
