Oral microbiome and its host

Oral microbial community at health contains hundreds of microbial species, including bacteria, Archaea, viruses, protozoa and fungi. The symbiotic co-evolution has led to a highly efficient mutualism between the host and its (oral) microbiome. Once this balance is lost, oral or even systemic diseases may develop. In this talk the role of different lifestyle factors and antimicrobials on the balance between us and our microbiome will be discussed.

Prof. dr. Egija Zaura is hoogleraar orale microbiële ecologie bij ACTA. Ze heeft haar studie tandheelkunde in Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm gevolgd, haar praktijkervaring in geboortestad Riga opgebouwd en gepromoveerd in Preventieve Tandheelkunde bij UvA in Amsterdam. De belangrijkste drijfveer in haar onderzoek is het begrijpen van wat de mond gezond houdt en om deze verkregen kennis implementeren in de praktijk.
